  Texas Film Scout

Before a camera rolls, before a crew arrives, before a location becomes part of the frame, someone has to know where to look.

For Houston location scout and location manager Bo Svensson, that work has stretched across nearly three decades, hundreds of shoots, and nearly every kind of production environment Texas can offer. A Houston native and the founder of Texas Film Scout, Svensson helps productions turn creative concepts into workable locations, bringing together a sharp visual instinct, deep local relationships, logistical know-how, and the kind of problem-solving that makes the final cut possible.

His work spans commercials, music videos, photo shoots, and branded productions, with recent work including a Volkswagen Super Bowl ad filmed in Houston. But for Svensson, the story of Houston production is not just about high-profile projects. It is about the people, places, and production community that continue to make the city a powerful place to work

We asked Svensson to talk about his start in the industry, what people misunderstand about location work, and why Houston remains one of Texas' most versatile production cities:

How did you get started in your field?

A friend from high school referred me to work on a set for DeBeers Diamonds in 1999. That first job opened the door, and I've been working in the industry ever since.

What are some notable projects you've worked on?

It depends on the category– I regularly do commercials, music videos, and photo shoots. I estimate having done close to 1,000 shoots, around three jobs a month for 27 years.

What is one project you are especially proud of, and why?

I did a shoot for Habitat for Humanity. I also filmed Magic Johnson inside a Texas prison for a project where HIV-positive prisoners were provided free medication. Those kinds of projects stay with you.

What skills or qualities are most important for a location scout and location manager?

You need a creative eye, people skills, organizational skills, and you have to like problem-solving. Every location comes with its own challenges.
